Ultraman (Urutoraman) is a tokusatsu series produced by Tsuburaya Productions featuring a superhero named Ultraman. This series is the second series in Serial Ultra after the tokusatsu series Ultra Q, but is the first series to feature Ultraman. Consisting of 39 episodes in total, the series first aired on the Japanese television network TBS from 17 July 1966 to 9 April 1967. Ultraman was created by Eiji Tsuburaya of Tsuburaya Productions, a special effects pioneer.
This series is the beginning of Tsuburaya's success which continues to this day. The authenticity of Ultraman's story is proven by the success of Ultraman as a pop culture phenomenon in Japan until now. At that time in the United States, superhero stories from Marvel and DC comics were popular, but the story of a superhero giant had never been made. Ultraman is the main concept of this series. Although most television series in Japan aired for a full year, the series was discontinued in episode 39. Tsuburaya's production team admitted to being exhausted in this project. However, the success of Ultraman made Tsuburaya's party make a sequel 6 months later with the title Ultraseven. The popularity of Ultraman makes this series continue to be developed.
Ultraman comes from Nebula M78. He is a lecturer at Space University as well as a member of the Space Garrison. It is also said that he had a life there. His father is the director of the Space Security Board and his mother is a teacher at Ultra school. He came to earth for a reason. He was chasing a monster named Bemular. However, Ultraman collided with a battleship from the Space Patrol named SSIT that came from earth. The pilot named Shin Hayata was almost killed in that incident. Feeling guilty, it was at that critical moment that Ultraman decided to share his energy with Hayata so that Hayata would live.
Ultraman is weak against Earth's atmosphere. Earth's atmosphere reduces the sun's energy which is the source of its power, and is not as free as when it is in outer space which is empty of air. The structure of Earth's air is also different from the planet it comes from. Based on that reason, Ultraman can only fight in his giant form for only 3 minutes. In his struggle to protect the earth, Ultraman was finally defeated by an extraterrestrial named Zetton. Even though in the end Zetton was defeated by the SSIT team, it seems Ultraman can't be helped anymore. Suddenly, Zoffy appears to help. Zoffy explained to Ultraman that to repair the damaged color timer, Ultraman must undergo treatment on his home planet. In the end, Zoffy separated Ultraman from Hayata, and giving enough power to Hayata so he can survive for a while until Ultraman returns to earth. The series ends without it being known whether Hayata reunited with Ultraman or not.
