Descripton
Pulaar is a variety of Peul, spoken by the Peuls, mainly in Senegal, but also in Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Gambia, Mali and Mauritania.
The Pulaar name (with a long -aa-) is not to be confused with the Pulaar appellation (with a short -a-) used by the speakers of Fuuta Jalon. The Pulaar appellation is that used by Peul speakers who speak this dialectal variant in particular in Senegal, Mauritania and in some regions of Mali. The other ethnic groups, cohabiting with the Pulaar-speaking peoples, often have other names. For example, the Wolofs designate the language by pël, [pəl], “peul”, and the Mandingoes designate it by fula, [fula], “foula”.
The name Pulaar lets transparent the radical pul- which leads to the name of the ethnic group (pull-o in the singular and ful-ɓe in the plural). As for -aar, it appears to be a suffix but has no clearly identified function in the language. In fact, synchronously, there is no productive -aar suffix in English. Thus, the Pulaar name is only half transparent and its origin remains obscure.
