Alphabet is a form of writing based on a standard set of characters. In the alphabet, individual characters - letters - designate the phonemes of the language, although the one-to-one correspondence sound ↔ letter is rare and tends to be lost in the development of oral language. The alphabet differs from pictographic (ideographic) writing, where signs stand for concepts (Sumerian cuneiform), and morphemic and logographic writing, where signs stand for individual morphemes (Chinese writing) or words.


The Russian alphabet is the alphabet of the Russian language, in its current form with 33 letters, which has actually existed since 1918 (officially only since 1942: it was previously believed that there were 32 letters in the Russian alphabet, since E and Ё were considered as variants of the same letter).
