Surah Al Baqarah of 286 verses came down in Medina which was largely revealed at the beginning of the Hijrah, except verse 281 revealed in Mina on Hajji wadaa '(the last hajj of the Prophet Muhammad). The entire verse from the sura Al Baqarah including the Madaniyyah, is the longest sura of the suras of the Qur'an in which there is also the longest verse (verse 282). This surah is named Al Baqarah because it contains the mention of the slaying of the female cows ordered by Allah to the Children of Israel (verses 67 through 74), in which the Jewish character is described in general. It is named Fusthaatul-Quran (the top of the Quran) because it contains several laws that are not mentioned in another sura. Named the sura alif-laam-miim as this letter begins with Alif-laam-miim.
