"Attack on Titan" was created by Isayama A Japanese manga work by Hajime. And works such as novels (light novels), animations, games, movies, etc. based on it.


A dark fantasy manga depicting the battle between giants with overwhelming power and humans who oppose them. Started serialization in "Bessatsu Shonen Magazine" (Kodansha) from the October issue (first issue) released on September 9, 2009. In "Weekly Shonen Magazine" (Kodansha), a special edition was published twice as a business trip read. It was announced that the May issue of the Bessatsu Shonen Magazine, scheduled to be released on April 9, 2021, will reach its final episode.

Since the spin-off novelization in 2011, various media mixes have been developed, and in particular, the anime that started in 2013 has been so popular that it has continued to the series of four works.

In December 2010 (when the 3rd volume was released), the total circulation of the 2 volumes already published exceeded 1 million copies. The circulation of up to 9 volumes exceeded 12 million copies at the beginning of April 2013 (volume 10 was released), but after the start of the anime broadcast, sales increased further, and at the beginning of August of the same year (volume 11 was released). It exceeded 23 million copies by 10 volumes. As of December 2019, it has exceeded 100 million copies. It is the second Kodansha manga to surpass 100 million copies, following the Kindaichi Case Files series.

It is also published in various countries overseas, and in Korea, the comic has recorded sales of over 350,000 copies since 2011 (as of August 2013). Anime was also broadcast on television at the same time as Japan. Due to its popularity, the broadcast date was changed, and the theme song and original soundtrack were released at the same time as Japan, creating an unusual boom. In the United States, Volume 1 of this work ranked first in the second week of October 2013 in the Weekly Manga Ranking published in the New York Times (NY Times) bestseller section. 2nd place was volume 2, 4th place was volume 7, 5th place was volume 3, and this work accounted for 4 of the best 5.


This work is based on the one-shot version of the author's debut work "Attack on Titan". Shintaro Kawakubo, the editor in charge from the time of bringing in, thought that ``Isayama's style matches the concept of ``Betsu Maga'', so he proposed to remake a one-shot version for serialization in line with the competition. According to Kawakubo, since it was a new serialization in a magazine that was launched while fumbling, it was difficult at first because the guidelines and reader trends were unclear, but thanks to that, it was possible to experiment.

In the one-shot version, the settings are different, such as ``Giants are weapons created by religious science groups to destroy mankind'' and ``Wireless devices can be used without the appearance of three-dimensional mobile devices'', but ``Humans are in places where giants cannot enter. It also included the elements of the serial version, such as "a soldier belonging to the human resistance army gains the power to transform into a giant". The author says, "I thought of a world view that would make the most of the giants," and "I started creating with a world view in mind."

The genre is dark fantasy, but elements such as magic and supernatural powers are modest. It incorporates military settings such as an organized army and tactics, equipment that matches the available science and technology, and is basically a hard-line development like a fictitious war chronicle. In addition, there are many mysteries in the setting of the giants and the world, which will be solved as the story progresses.

If you remove the cover of the book, you will see a medieval archival-style painting depicting people fleeing from giants, crossing the sea, and migrating within the walls of another land. At first glance, the characters written on the picture look unreadable, and when turned upside down, they are actually Japanese written in katakana. These are the contents that touch the core of the story, but Isayama says, "This is the first page of the textbook in this world, and it contains the knowledge that everyone has in common."

It was a worldview reminiscent of medieval Europe, but later it was revealed that it was originally a worldview with modernized infrastructure such as airships, railroads, and ports. Modern warfare and ethnic conflicts are also themes.

Since the Marley arc, foreign countries that do not have the power of Titans, other than Marley and Paradis Island, have acquired military power that will give them an advantage in battles against Titans. This is the result of the efforts of other countries to develop weapons while Marley, who overestimated the power of the giants, pursued a colonial policy.
