What is known today about the life of Almeida is recorded in the Dedication of one of his books and in the minutes of the presbyteries of Reformed Churches in Southeast Asia, for which he worked as pastor, missionary and translator during the second half of the seventeenth century.
Born in the city of Torres de Tavares in Portugal, Almeida died in 1693 - in Batavia - the current island of Java, Indonesia. At the age of only 16, João Ferreira de Almeida begins the task of translating the Bible, which is dedicated to the end of his life.
Today, the Almeida translation, made in 1753, is among us in several versions:
"Old Version" (Brazilian Bible Society and other publishers): because of the scrupulous fidelity to the Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek originals is useful for the study, yet too rigid for liturgical-catechetical use.
"Corrected Version" (Batista Press): integrates corrections from better manuscripts, slightly updating the language.
"Updated version" (Brazilian Bible Society): equally corrected based on better manuscripts and updated more boldly on language. It is the "vulgate" of Protestants of various denominations in Brazil today (Bible Society of Brazil, Rio de Janeiro 1969). There are many editions, for different uses; let us mention only the "New Life" Bible, provided with good study material.
